Greater Security for Everyday Transactions
EMV and Contactless debit cards from The Exchange State Bank provide an extra layer of security to every purchase you make with your card.
Why Contactless Cards?
Contactless checkout is ideal when speed and convenience are essential. You can use it at stadiums, fast food restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, transit locations and more. Contactless payment puts you in control and protects your data. Your card or device never leaves your hand, reducing the risk of loss or counterfeit, and each purchase is uniquely encrypted. You’re also protected against double billing, even if you accidentally tap twice.
Tap to Pay Functionality
Your new debit card does indeed have Tap To Pay! How to use your Contactless Card
- Look for the contactless symbol on the payment terminal.
- Tap your card to the front of the POS terminal.
- Wait for a beep or green light before removing your card (you can put your card away - you won't need it again).
- Follow any instructions on the screen (you might be asked to sign or enter your PIN).
What makes EMV Cards Safer?
Instead of swiping your debit card, EMV cards, also called "chip cards," use a process called "dipping" to transfer transaction information.
The debit card you've used for years has a magnetic strip on the back of it. This strip contains all of the financial information linked to your checking account. This data never changes, meaning that if someone somehow got this information, they could make purchases without needing your card. This is what happens when breaches at major stores occur, and why debit cards are replaced after such incidents.
On the other hand, EMV cards have a chip in them that creates a specific string of data for each transaction. Once that code has been used, it cannot be used again or duplicated. This is what makes EMV cards more secure.
How to Use Your EMV Debit Card
- Insert your card into a chip-friendly reader (if available, as some retailers may not have a chip-friendly reader in place yet)
- Approve the amount. During this time, the unique transaction code will be created
- Follow the prompt to either sign or enter your PIN
- When prompted, remove your EMV card from the slot
- Celebrate knowing you made a secure transaction!
